How to unite the Hearthlands

01

Found

Place two settlements and roads in snake order. Your second settlement gathers starting resources.

02

Gather

Roll each turn. Settlements collect one resource from matching tiles; cities collect two.

03

Build

Choose a piece above the board, tap a highlighted path or corner, then confirm its preview. Tap your settlement to preview a city upgrade. Cancel or select a different spot before confirming.

04

Trade

Roll first and resolve production or the seven completely before trading. Trade 4:1 with the bank, 3:1 at a generic port, or 2:1 at your matching port. Player trades must involve the active primary player. Accept exchanges the exact offered cards; no gifts or matching resources on both sides.

05

The robber

On a seven, everyone holding over seven resources chooses half to discard, rounded down. After all discards, the roller moves the robber and chooses a neighboring opponent to steal one random resource from. Blocked tiles do not produce.

06

Development

Pay one sheep, wheat, and ore. Play one older card per activation, before rolling or during actions: Knight moves the robber; Road Building grants two roads; Year of Plenty takes two available resources; Monopoly takes one resource type from every opponent. Hidden victory cards can win immediately when bought.

07

Bonuses

The first unbroken road of at least five earns two points. A longer road takes the bonus; the holder keeps ties. Opponent settlements interrupt roads. Three played Knights earn Largest Army; a larger army takes its two points.

08

Five or six

The primary player rolls, trades, and builds. Then the player three seats clockwise takes actions without rolling or trading with players. Bank trading and development cards are allowed. Both markers then move one seat. Either active player can win.

09

Point together

Everyone can point, even off-turn. Point mode (P) and Alt-click send a coloured ping, never a piece. Your turn automatically returns to placement. If you enable pointing during a placement, use Return to placement to build.

10

Make it your table

The host can shuffle the island in the lobby. Starting the game locks that exact preview. The board expands when a fifth player joins. Zoom, drag, or pinch to inspect the board. Arrow keys move among legal spots; Enter previews one. Sound is optional and off by default.

Three or four players use 19 land tiles and 19 cards of each resource. Five or six use 30 land tiles and 24 of each. If production exceeds the bank, nobody receives that type unless just one player is affected; then they take what remains. A city replaces a settlement and returns that piece. You have 15 roads, 5 settlements, and 4 cities.

Returning later: close your browser or use Save & exit. Your seat, hand, and board position remain saved. Select the table under Saved tables to return, or use your private resume key on another device. A lost connection never resigns for you.

Removal house rule: request removal from the admin; your holdings stay yours until approved. Only the admin may remove a player. The admin must explicitly choose another active player as successor before leaving. Going offline never transfers the admin role. Approved removal returns held resources and unplayed development cards and removes that player's roads and buildings. Used card effects are not undone. The island and supply size remain unchanged; survivors can continue, including two-player continuation.

Placement undo house rule: Undo (Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z) reverses eligible placements during your own activation and refunds their cost. It cannot undo another player's turn, a completed game, trades, drawn cards, dice results, or theft. A starting settlement can be changed before confirming its road; the road finishes that setup turn. Moving the robber can be undone only before stealing or another irreversible action. Unconfirmed previews can always be cancelled before submission.

Development decks: three/four-player games contain 14 Knights, 5 Victory Points, and 2 each of Monopoly, Road Building, and Year of Plenty (25 total). Five/six-player games contain 20 Knights, 5 Victory Points, and 3 each of those progress cards (34 total).

Reach 10 points on your own activation to win, including hidden victory cards. Victory is automatic.

Uses the base game and 2025 paired-player extension mechanics. Does not include separate expansions such as Seafarers or Cities & Knights. Publisher rules reference.
